The ground floor comprises of an open plan kitchen/dining room/livingroom with a high wooden beamed ceiling and cartwheel central light fitting, log burning stove (with oven), electric oven and hob (with extractor), fridge/freezer, dining table and chairs and a 4 seater bed settee. There is also an electric heater for those chilly winter nights. Digital tv has also recently been installed. The 1st floor comprises of 1 bedroom with twin beds, tv with digi tv and bedroom furniture. The lower ground floor comprises of a utility area with washing machine, iron, ironing board and log burning stove, shower room with wc and wash basin and 1 bedroom with double bed settee, en-suite wc, wash basin and fitted wardrobe. Towels and bed linen are provided.
There is parking to the right of the house and a small, gated, paved area to the front. To the rear of the house is a private south-easterly facing garden with a covered seating area and a fire pit for traditional Hungarian outdoor cooking.
Prices start at 10,000 huf per night. That is for the rental of the house, NOT per person.

Within 200 metres there is a bank with atm, pastry shop/bakery, local bar, grocer's, green grocer's, hardware shop, doctor, dentist and 2 restaurants. Also in the village there is a post office, fuel station, hairdresser's, beauty salon and various other small retail establishments.

Sirok is a very traditional village situated in North East Hungary between the Bukk and Matra mountains, 20 kms from the baroque town of Eger and is most famous for its medieval castle ruins which was built on the top of a 300 meter high rocky plateau in the 13th century. Almost the entire castle was carved out of the rock on which it stands. Magnificent 360* views can be had from here stretching out to the highest point in Hungary (Blue Mountain), the Slovakian mountains and the Bukk mountains.

The climate here means that summers generally start in May/June with temperatures between 25*c - 35*c and start to cool down at the end of August. Winter is normally December, January and February when temperatures can reach -20*c. Spring and Autumn tend to be warm and comfortable.

There are many opportunities to get out and about, whether it be fishing, horse riding, walking, motorcycling, sight seeing, wine tasting, thermal spas, the list is endless. Within 25 kms there are fantastic, twisty biking roads (in July each year Sirok hosts the famous Hungarian Bike Week which attracts thousands of bikers from across Europe), excellent fishing lakes (with very large fish not present in English waters), countless wine cellars with award winning wines, forests teaming with wildlife including wild boar, mouflon, red and roe deer, amazing architecture, museums, castles etc etc etc. Only 10 minutes drive away is the picturesque village of Bukkszek with its thermal spa. Several other thermal spas with healing properties can be reached within 25kms.

The village has excellent bus links with Budapest, Eger and surrounding villages.

Our house is available to let on a daily basis so that those just passing through also have the opportunity to share in the wealth of local culture and beauty that this region has to offer. We can also arrange tailored trips to suit individual needs in our seven seater people carrier with ourselves who speak Hungarian and English. This way you can see more of the real Hungary without the worry of finding your way around, language difficulties or car hire. The Hungarians have a zero tollerance on drinking and driving so you will also be able to sample the local beers and wines and arrive back home safely.

Below are some e-mails from guests who visited us recently:

"I contacted Paul and arranged a one-day tour on 2 JAN around the Eger area for myself and traveling partner. That day we spent with Paul and his charming wife, Erika, who speaks Hungarian by the way, turned out to be the highlight of our trip and a terrific experience for us. Paul and Erika were the perfect hosts. Even though we just met Paul and Erika for the first time, it felt like we were traveling around with long-time friends. Before we got there, Paul and Erika spent a lot of time checking into attractions and sights to make a fun day.I also was able to design the tour according to my own interests. All I had to do was tell Paul where I would like to go and they both checked into the posibilities. The places we visited were very interesting and enjoyable and the pace we traveled was also very relaxing, even though we covered a lot.All in total, everything worked out great and I highly recommend anyone traveling to the Eger area to definitely contact Paul and Erika for a truly great time and a chance to meet and make friends with two very nice and hospitable local people too.I plan to tell all my friends about the wonderful time we had and suggest they go to Hungary and Eger to spend time with Paul and Erika.

Sirok castle in winter

The village of Sirok is situated in Heves county, North East Hungary. It is around a 1 1/2-2 hour drive from Budapest airport. There are also excellent public transport links between Sirok and Budapest. Several buses a day travel direct although a more flexible approach is by bus from Budapest to Eger and then bus from Eger to Sirok as these are more frequent. Numerous trains also make the journey each day.

Please keep checking this blog as we will update it on a regular basis, but not necessarily add new posts, just add more information to the existing posts. Thankyou.
